CAMP SHAKER
Our main summer program, Camp Shaker, has been in existence since 1980 and serves primarily as a recreation program for our students and children from the surrounding area. All campers are Shaker Kids, whether they attend the school during the academic year, or only come for camp. Camp Shaker is a traditional day camp, with overnight components, serving the community for more than a quarter century. An extension of the school, the camp operates from late June until late August. Camp facilities include the school’s main campus, a cottage on Lake Winnisquam, many acres on the Merrimack River, and a favorite campground in northern Maine on Lake Aziscohos.

SUMMER DAY CAMP
Soon after the final school bell sounds in June, Camp Shaker comes alive with the sights and sounds of summer. Campers ranging in age from three years to fifteen enthusiastically flood Shaker Road School with dreams of the perfect summer. Since 1980, campers have participated in all that Camp Shaker has to offer. Red Cross certified swim instructors teach daily lessons, experienced camp counselors plan exciting activities for campers, and theme weeks liven up the camp atmosphere. In ten short weeks, campers are treated to a summer full of activities and memories.
Campers have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of available activities. Our low camper to counselor ratio ensures that each camper’s needs are met. Counselors are mostly former campers, teachers, or assistant teachers who have been with us for many years. In addition to the counselors, we have a program for counselors in training (CITs). These young people are students entering tenth grade who volunteer their time to learn leadership skills and the responsibilities of becoming a counselor.
Camp Shaker offers a wide variety of daily activities including athletics, swimming and golf lessons, arts and crafts, drama, music, nature study, video games, camping, media center, canoeing and kayaking, and others. The Camp Store has become quite popular in recent years, drawing campers for snacks and lunch. There are many traditions that have developed since 1980, including annual trips to Grammy and Grandpa’s Camp (our cottage on Lake Winnisquam), Camp Olympics, Overnights (camp outs), kayaking on the Merrimack, trips to Aziscohos (a week in northern Maine), Camper vs. Counselor Day, and of course the end of the summer Carnival.
Campers may arrive to camp as early as 6:30 A.M. for free play activities such as basketball and capture the flag. Most campers arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 A.M., so the daily schedule officially begins at 8:45. Camps rotate through a set schedule, with time blocked for swimming lessons and free swim, snacks/lunch, golf/arts and crafts, and activity time. Activity time allows campers to make choices of what games they would like to play. Capture the flag, soccer, and dodge ball are always favorites. Counselors take care to arrange activities that are less athletic as well, allowing all campers to participate in something they like.
OVERNIGHT CAMP / aziscohos
Overnight camp outs and field trips to NH State Parks rotate during the middle weeks of the summer. Three nights during the summer, campers may stay over at Shaker. Campers participate in evening and morning swims, movies, camp fires, night walks, and more. Campers also have opportunities to visit popular state parks, including Wellington, Hampton or Wallis Sands, and Sunapee. Extended trips include the ever popular Aziscohos trip to Northern Maine where our oldest campers tent for one week at a wilderness campground on the shores of Lake Aziscohos. They return with stories of seeing moose, being awakened by the loons or woodpeckers, and canoe trips to the island. With all of these activities, our summer is quite packed.
